My journey...
2010-2013: I did a BA in English & Psychology at Western University. Throughout undergrad, I volunteered as a reading tutor for the London Public Library and for the Thames Valley District School Board. In my final year, I was lucky to take a year-long Psychology seminar with Dr. Debra Jared on Reading Ability and Disability...this is where I first encountered the Science of Reading, my area of passion! I also studied creative writing and got to write a creative thesis!
2013-2014: I completed a BEd in Primary-Junior Education through Western's Althouse Faculty of Education. I was so lucky to do a practicum in Full-Day Kindergarten at Sir Arthur Carty Catholic School, which is home to more newcomers than any other school in the district! I loved teaching in this diverse community!
2014-2018: I taught at independent schools here in Vancouver, working with Kindergarten, Grade 2, and Grade 5 at various times. I also took summer classes on physical literacy, applied linguistics, and math instruction! As well, I had opportunities to give conference presentations on topics including writing instruction and the use of e-portfolios for documentation.
I absolutely LOVE being in the classroom and especially delight in incorporating literacy instruction in cross-curricular inquiry units. My goal is to ground my practice in research while creating an engaging, joyful classroom environment!
2018-2021: UBC's MFA in Creative Writing was the next step on my journey! While studying poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, I had the opportunity to teach writing workshops in a high school through New Shoots and to work as a Teaching Assistant for undergraduate courses. I then became the TA Coordinator for my program, facilitating professional development workshops on topics such as assessment, equity and diversity, and engaging instructional strategies. I was the recipient of a SSHRC grant as well as a BC Arts Council Scholarship. I'm so incredibly grateful for the experiences I had and the relationships I developed through the MFA!
2021: I completed a contract as a Resource Support Teacher at an independent school in Vancouver. In this role, I learned so much about differentiation and inclusion! By facilitating daily literacy intervention sessions, I had the opportunity to put my understanding of the cognitive underpinnings of reading into practice. I also took an online course on Shifting the Balance of literacy instruction towards research-based practices, which reinvigorated my passion for this topic!
2022: I stepped out of my comfort zone to teach in London, England! I learned so much from the students and educators there. Such an adventure!
2023-4: I'm teaching Grades 2/3 in Richmond School District 38! I am so happy to get to work with my wonderful students this year!
